My Story

I’ve cared about clothes for as long as I can remember.

My first real sewing project (I don't think embroidering family members' names on their socks with my Game Boy-powered sewing machine counts, or does it?) was a tinsel tank top when I was ten. I spent DAYS making this top and I was so proud at the end, only for it to fall apart immediately. It was pretty heartbreaking - but I'll be honest, it was nothing new.  This was around the early 2000s when everything was made so cheap that you couldn't even wash it.  I knew then that there had to be another way so I started paying attention to everything.

That curiosity turned into continued sewing, sketching (I never was good at this), and learning fabric characteristics through low-grade science projects like seeing how quickly my Charlotte Russe shirts melted under the iron.

This curiosity got me through college, where I earned a degree in apparel and textiles (I grabbed a marketing degree too, because come on, something has to pay the bills), and into years of working in costume and theatrical production. I loved the artistry, the fabrics, all of it - but what really hooked me was clothing in the real world. The everyday character. The way a pair of jeans, a jacket, or a dress can quietly signal who you are.

I carried that lens everywhere. Including the sky. I traveled extensively - even taking a job as a flight attendant to observe different groups of people. I spent years taking in the style and behaviors of people from all walks of life how they dressed, what they repeated, what wore beautifully, and what didn’t. I noticed patterns. I noticed quality. I noticed confidence. I noticed when something was just expensive versus actually worth it.

Along my journey, I also took time to assist in building custom bridal gowns, grew a vintage clothing store in New Haven, CT, taught people how to sew and mend in classes after my day job, helped scale a men's accessory company, styled friends, and answered the same questions over and over:

Is this worth the money?
Will this last?
What fabric should I be looking for?
Why does this fit feel off?

I still wear pieces I bought over 15 years ago. That’s not an accident. I believe, and always have believed, the secret to style isn’t trends - it’s timelessness, care, and knowing what to look for.

These days, people come to me for advice almost daily - shopping online, dressing for an event, building a closet that actually works, and learning how to repair instead of replace. This site is where I share what I’ve learned: how to buy better, make things last longer, understand fabrics, save money, and feel good in what you wear.

I travel often. I study people. I’m always learning.

Cheers!

Alyssa
